How to Clean Split Air Conditioner (Filter And Coil) – DIY: This video is a step by step tutorial of how you can clean both filter and coil of air conditioner unit yourself.

Step 1: Turn off the unit and remove the front panel or top cover of Split Air Conditioning unit. Remove the filters and wipe the unit with wet cloth to remove excessive dust.

Step 2: Rinse the filter with water and soak it in a sink for few minutes (depending on how dirty it is – ideally 10-15 if it is too dirty). Gently scrub it with a soft brush that dispenses some soap or mix some soap in water. Rinse it again with clean water and let it dry in the sun.

Step 3: Use any self rinsing air conditioning coil cleaning solution or foam and spray it on the coils of indoor wall mounted unit. I have used Simple Green 750ml Air Con Cleaner from Bunnings which cost me only AUD $16.

Step 4: My outdoor unit was covered in dust and cobwebs. I sprayed aircon self rinsing foam on the coil of the outdoor unit and scrubbed it gently with a brush. After 15 minutes, I washed it with a garden hose and it came out very clean.

Step 5: I sprayed Glen20 which is an antibacterial spray on the dry filters to kill any bacteria.

Step 6: Once both filters were completely dry, I placed them back in the air con. I turned ON the unit, set the temperature to 24 and Fan speed to maximum and ran it for 40-45 minutes approximately. Self rinsing coil cleaner did its job and cleaned the coils.
